WHY i think rick beato is wrong about music fans…

Rick Rubin & Rick Beato chat about all sorts of brilliant, insightful & interesting musical things on the podcast Tetragrammaton.

Highly recommend giving it a listen!

Rick Beato’s comment about streaming leading to a disconnect between music and fans and it’s been devalued. I can see where he’s coming from, but…

I just see so much evidence around me of passionate music fans buying vinyl / CDs, going to shows, geeking out (being nerdy) and also using streaming to check out new music.

I think instead of seeing it like streaming has led to a loss of passion or connection to music, or a devaluing, I believe that there is simply more people, more listening / ways to listen, more access and WAY more music being made without the need for a huge budget to recoup costs (ie, no huge marketing & PR selling the story of the band to millions of people via radio, TV, magazines etc).

Old school music fans were sold the products with very sophisticated and expensive ad campaigns and the bands became global stars. Now it’s different, but the passion from the fans is still there. It’s just there are smaller ad budgets and literally tens of thousands more bands & artists. What do you think? And yes, I did use Rick’s tactic of trying a baiting video title!
