MUSIC PRODUCTION & MIXING INSPIRATION – PARALLEL COMPRESSION

Have you added parallel compression to your production skills yet? Well you’d better catch up! Us Pro’s have been doing it forever and you’re missing a trick!

ou want more energy & vibe in your tracks right? Here’s six minutes of me wanging on about how parallel compression will do this. Ableton Live heads will wanna watch the whole thing but if you’re here for the concept then the first few mins will open that door. I think my pal Ed Chivers showed me the chain selector blending technique – works a treat!

Music PRODUCTION iNSPIRATION – DREAM POP, ETHEREAL VOCAL MIXING TIPS

Music Production Inspiration for ethereal dream pop vocals. Thanks to Beth Sarah for asking me to mix this lush song and congrats for getting it selected by BBC Introducing for a spin! I like to think the mix helped 🙂 – Independent Artists: are you uploading your songs to BBC Introducing? If not why not?

Whoops! Wrong plugin (but a great mixing trick!)

One little mixing ‘trick’ for ya drums using Logic Pro stock clip distortion plugin.

One little goal of mine is to share useful, simple and not too ‘textbook’ production & mixing ideas. I want to inspire & exchange ideas with self-recording, self-producing artists & songwriters.

I’m self taught and always enjoy those little nuggets that I can adapt to my needs. In what other ways could you use this plugin? Comment below.

GUITAR MIXING TECHNIQUE – REVERB A TONE SHAPING TOOL

So it turns out you can shape the tone of an instrument in a mix – in this case electric guitars – by processing the reverb. Room reverb is one of my favourite things to use in a mix to unify it and create a sense of depth and realness. This technique was partly inspired by the band The Walkmen who’s guitar sound is heavily dosed in bright reverb. Let me know if you have any feedback or ideas about how to use reverb as a tone shaping tool.

How I Made a Track Sound Old and Lo-Fi. (Using Goodhertz Plugins)

Pro Mixing Technique for adding warmth, density, energy, saturation and dirt to your music.

I’m using Goodhertz Tupe and Vulf Compressor (by Vulfpeck) and I re-amped the bass synth with Ableton Live’s stock amp & cab sim because synths through amps is the one!

BASS THAT CUTS THROUGH THE MIX

Mixing bass is hard! I’m still figuring out how to nail it with every track. Synth bass can be over powering and tonally complex and in a busy track, it can get muddy or lost.

With this mixing technique, saturation is layered in with the main bass synth to help the bass line be heard in the mix and on smaller speakers like phones or laptops.

More low end or volume doesn’t really achieve clarity or presence and might just ruin your entire mix! Layering saturation solves this problem really easily.

Give it a try yourself in Ableton Live or your DAW of choice. Soundtoys Decapitator is a great saturation plugin but you can do this with any saturation plugin that can make a dirty sound.

Remember to filter out the low end using a high pass to avoid adding a lot of additional low end.
